Based on a review of patient outcomes, quality, safety, and quality standards, Rochester, NY hospitals were ranked amongst the best performers in the country.
According to U.S. News and World Report, the rankings included everything, including risk-adjusted survival rate, staffing, and other health care metrics.
Other top hospitals were also ranked based on state-level rankings. They included a variety of community hospitals as well as medical centers throughout the Finger Lakes and Hudson Valley, and the Southern Tier.
Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester Medical Center tied for No. New York’s 12th. It is ranked nationally in neonatology and pediatrics nephrology. There are also high-performing rankings of 10 adult specialties, procedures, and conditions.
Rochester General Hospital tied for No. 20. It was a top-performing place for six adult specialties, procedures, and conditions.
Highland Hospital, Rochester tied for No. 25. It was ranked in three conditions and procedures for adults.
White Plains Hospital tied at No. 16. It was ranked nationally in gynecology and had seven high-performing rankings in adult specialties, procedures, and conditions.

The report highlighted a new patient experience score (and a new outcome measure) that measures how frequently patients return home from the hospital rather than moving to a nursing home or another institutional care setting.
Experts say that the scores used to determine the differences can be attributed to different scoring methods. However, patients should still be aware of each system’s results as they are likely to focus on important issues.

The review resulted in a change in what defines a top hospital. Only 165 hospitals from more than 4,500 nationwide were ranked within one specialty.
According to U.S. News & World Report’s 2014-15 ranking America’s Top Hospitals, three adult specialties and one child specialty have been named in the Top 50 national programs for complex conditions. These rankings are based on data from nearly 5,000 hospitals. Only 144 of them had at least one program that made it onto the national list.
In the remaining specialties ranked by U. S. News, Strong Memorial’s programs for cancer, cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, diabetes, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat conditions), geriatrics,orthopaedics, pulmonary, and urology all scored in the top 25 percent of eligible hospitals. The Highland Hospital at UR Medicine is a high-performing hospital in otolaryngology.
